5 Mistakes That can Give Unions a Foothold in Your Company
With the pro-union Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) floundering in
Congress, some businesses believe they'll never see a unionizing
effort. Those businesses, however, are most vulnerable to unionization...
Beware: Wellness Programs May Trigger Workers' Comp Claims Is an off-duty employee who's injured while participating in an
exercise class at his work site entitled to workers' compensation? Yes - if the employer sponsored the activity, according to a recent ruling by a New York appellate court. In the case of...
What HR can do to Protect Your Company's Online Reputation While managers may be concerned their employees are wasting too much
time on Facebook and Twitter, they might have something bigger to worry
about. According to the latest figures, nearly half of all adults have a
Facebook and/or Myspace account, and the number of Twitter users has
grown by 1,300 percent in the past year. With this explosion in
popularity, odds are that a good amount of your employees spend at
least part of their workday logging on to these sites...

Narrowly Passed Health-Care Bill Reaches
Roadblock in Senate By a vote of 220-215, the House
recently passed the MBA-OPPOSED HR 3962,
the Affordable Health Care for America Act. The bill was opposed
by the following Pennsylvania Representatives: Altimire (D-4), Holden (D-17),
Dent (R-15), Gerlach (R-6), Tim Murphy (R-18), Pitts (R-16), Platts (R-19),
Shuster (R-9) and Thompson (R-5). Locally, Representatives Kathy Dahlkemper
(D-3) and Chris Carney (D-10) supported the measure.
While the legislation is currently being debated on the Senate floor, it is unlikely it will move forward in its current form
as the government health plan in the House legislation is accepted by very few
Democrats in the Senate. This means that the health-care overhaul could drift
into 2010, as there are only a few weeks left on the legislative calendar.
